The production of the Rolls-Royce Wraith was carried out from 1938 and 1939 at their Derby factory. It took over the Rolls –Royce 25/30. The Wraith had a wheelbase which was four inches larger than its earlier model. The overhead valve and the 4257cc engine were also based on the 25/30. The car had a cross-flow cylinder head and a four speed gearbox. Other than the first speed, the higher ones had synchromesh and was a right hand change going by the tradition.

The front suspension of the Wraith retained the leaf springs of the rear axle. The governor controlled the damping rate of the front hydraulic dampers and so it differed with the speed of the vehicle. This made the car superior than the 25/30. The chassis of the car did not have the riveted construction but was welded. Hispano-Suiza had the car engine patented and its drum brakes were built by Rolls-Royce. The 17 inch wire wheels of the car had removable discs that covered the spokes.

The car also had hydraulic jacking system fitted underneath the passenger seat which could be operated with the help of a lever. The speed of the car depended on its style and weight and could notch up a speed of 85mph. According to the test by one of the renowned motor magazine the car could speed up from 0 to 50 in just 16.4 sec. The Rolls-Royce also featured in some of the famous Hollywood movies like My Favorite Brunette and Johnny Dangerously.

The Rolls-Royce Phantom, which was launched in 2003, is a luxury saloon vehicle which is made by a BMW subsidiary called Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The car is the first Rolls-Royce branded automobile made under BMW’s ownership. The 453hp and 531 ft of torque is a result of the 6.8L, 48-valve strong V12 engine. The engine of the incredible car is acquired from the existing V12powerplant of BMW. The car weighs 2485 kg and has been built on aluminium space frame. The Phantom has a height of 63 inches and measures 228 inches in length.

With six-speed automatic transmission, the car can notch up a speed of 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. It also has a double wishbone suspension. Apart from the US, because of compliance with the federal law, the Phantom has side markers on all vehicles. The Geneva Motor Show in March 2005 also saw an extended wheelbase Phantom which measured 250 mm longer than the regular Phantom. BMW took great care to differentiate Phantom from their other range. Though about 15 percent of the Phantom’s components are shared with other models of BMW, the Phantom maintains the traditional design cues of Rolls Royce.

Some of the new features of the Phantom include a power reserve dial indicating the amount of engine power that is left for the driver to avail. It also has rear-hinged doors and electronic locks that do not open accidently when you are on the move. BMW has a set limit of producing only 10,000 units of Phantom and the car has a base price of $340,000 in the US.
