Plymouth Road Runner was a muscle car manufactured by Chrysler between 1968 and 1980. Many were of the opinion that the early muscles cars were shifting away from their roots of being relatively cheap and fast cars. Plymouth did have an existing performance car at that time in the form of the GTX. However, designers wanted to recreate the concept of muscle cars.

Plymouth’s goal was to create a car that would run an incredible 14 second times within the quarter mile and sell the car for anything less than US$3000. Surprisingly both these goals were accomplished and this low priced muscle car was ready to hit the roads. This car was very well received by the customers and very soon replaced the high scale and low volume GTX.

Chrysler paid a whopping $50,000 to Warner Brothers in order to bag the rights to use name Road Runner, which was a name of a cartoon character from the Warner Brothers production house. This car was more of re-entry to the muscle cars space and Plymouth wanted it to create a niche for this model and hence spared no effort or resource to build this car.

Plymouth used the Chrysler B platform to create this car and all important aspects from performance to maintenance were upgraded. The looks were also given much importance and shaped up to be a great looking car with wonderful interior. It definitely is one of the greatest muscle car that has been ever built.

Chrysler Corporation initially marketed the Dodge Ram Van which was later taken over by Daimler Chrysler. The Ram Van being a cargovan also had a passenger version called the Dodge Ram Wagon. The production of the full size van started in 1971 and was built on B platform. During that time, the cargovans were called the Dodge Tradesman and the passenger vans were marketed as Dodge Sportsman.

Both the earlier named models were replaced later by the Ram nameplate in 1979. The Ram Van was later also built on AB plateform which was stronger and lighter than the other cars of that era. Although it had a unibody design, the popularity of the car could be attributed to the cab-over motorhome conversion. Despite being from different eras the B-series vans had similar construction. The modifications were generally made to the fenders on the front, grille, hood and bumpers.

The vans of the first generation had doors that were mounted back and had fixed panel in between the front and side door of the passenger. The second generation saw a departure from this panel as it was more of shorter wheelbase vehicles. The Dodge gained much popularity over the years as it was compatible with several installable options without undergoing a redesign.

Almost every engine that Chrysler used in its rear wheel drive productions was available in the B-series van. It included various six cylinder engines and V8 engines of different blocks. The Dodge Ram Van was marketed in the Chrysler’s lineup of “Adult Toys” in the late 1970s.

The Chrysler Neon, which is known as the Dodge Neon in North America, was introduced in January 1994 by the Dodge and Plymouth brands of Chrysler Corporation. The compact wheel drive car was offered in various colours and configurations and its production came to a halt in September 23, 2005. The second generation of the Neon went up for sale in the year 2000 and was available only as a 4-door sedan. The sole engine of the car was the 2.0 L SOHC engine which had an optional Magnum configuration and produced 150hp.

The second generation of the car was more refined when compared to the first generation car. The second generation was also advertised to have more than 1,000 refinements from the first generation. The frameless windows of the first generation gave way to a full framed door in the second generation. The numerous refinements made the car much quieter and more enjoyable passenger car. The refined interior and the increased size meant that the car was costlier and had an increased weight.

The second generation was also a departure from the DOHC engine which made it less competitive on the racing circle. The second generation Neon had a five-speed manual transmission which used the former ACR gear ratios. This made up for the loss in acceleration that was caused because of the increased weight. This though resulted in the car getting noisier and also hurt its mileage. The name of the car was changed to SX 2.0 in 2003 in Canada but the Neon moniker was finally brought back.

The Oldsmobile 88 which was also known as Eighty-Eight was produced from 1949 till 1999 was a full size car. The Oldsmobile division of General Motors was responsible for the sale of this car. The 88 line was the division’s top selling car from 1950 to 1974 with cars like 88 and Dynamic 88. The small size and the light weight of this car made the series an image leader for the company. In its early years, it was considered the best performing car from 1949 to 1951.

The car originally had a high compression V8 engine for a large and luxurious 98 series but later it was made into a smaller six-cylinder Oldsmobile. This eventually made 88 the granddaddy of all the muscle cars of that era. The first generation of the car was called the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 and was produced between 1949 and1953. It was available in 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan and a 4-door hardtop. The Rocket 88 had a V8 engine and 2-speed automatic and a 3 speed manual transmission.

The car has evolved over the years and currently has its 11th generation running. The Oldsmobile Regency now has H-body and is a 4-door sedan. With a 4-speed automatic transmission and a 3.8L V6 engine, the car sure keeps the legend of 88 going. The car has seen a number of variations over the years and was commonly shown in the form of numbers in its earlier years. The production of the car was mainly done in Wentzville, Missouri and Lake Orion, Michigan.

The Plymouth Barracuda is an exemplary muscle car which was produced by the Chrysler Corporation between 1964 and 1974. The Barracuda was a reincarnation of the earlier models of the Plymouth Valiant. Chrysler Corporation made the alteration with an intention of making a high selling vehicle. Plymouth though could not match the Ford Mustang during the mid 60s in terms of sales and popularity. The first Barracuda had a 273 cubic inch V8 base engine with 180 hp and could run 0-60 in less than 13 sec.

The Plymouth Barracuda is considered a pony car because it is an economical, sporty and a high performance vehicle. The executives initially considered naming the car as Panda, but eventually the idea of John Samsen was taken up and it was hence named as Barracuda.

The Barracuda had the wheelbase of the Valiant and its hood was designed during its production in the 1960s. The other alteration made to the Valiant was an additional rear window. The wraparound window was contemporarily the largest ever to have been used in a car. It was designed by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Chrysler designers.

To fight the intense competition, Plymouth introduced the Formula S package in 1965. The car had a V-8 engine and much broader wheels and tires. There were some changes made to the dashboard as well. Disc brakes and air conditions were also made available in the cars later on in the same year.

The production of the Barracuda was finally stopped as it could not match the Ford Mustang in sales and production. However, it still is the missing link between the long gone muscle cars of the 1960s and 70s.

The 1967 Chevrolet Nova SS was similar to the 1966 Nova, which had a 327 cubic-inch cylinder engine. The engine was capable of producing an amazing 350 horsepower and had chrome engine with larger valves four-barrel carburetor and an aluminum intake. The high compression pistons and an enhanced camshaft meant that the car could cover almost quarter of a mile in just 15 seconds. The 3000 pound car could also be made to cover the same distance in almost 13 seconds with some adjustments and modifications.

The comfort of having achieved a winning formula of style and performance meant that Chevrolet was built on the same lines of 1966 Nova SS. The minor changes that were made in the 1967 Chevrolet Nova were in the patterns of the seat covers and the grille was modified. The best part about the 1967 Nova was that the disc brakes for the car were now available directly and could be ordered from the factory. Another important thing about the 1967 Nova SS was that the car no longer had the L79 engine.

The 1967 Nova gives a sterling look by its pearl paint. It has sway bars on the front as well as on the rear. There is a scope for Air Gap intake in the 750 double pumper. The disc brake and the frame connectors are by Wilwood. The car also has LED tail lights. The Chevrolet Nova was often regarded as the ultimate sleeper car and considered a versatile muscle car with maximum potential and one which could easily be customized.
