Lamborghini showcased it at an auto show in Turin in the year 1970. However, it wasn’t until 1973 that this car was made available to the buyers.

Marcello Gandini from Carrozzeria Bertone designed the body of this car, which was a two plus two coupe and unlike the Lamborghini Miura, a supercar, this was more affordable. It can be said that it was an alternative of the present Maserati Merak and Ferrari Dino.

In 1979, Lamborghini aborted the production of this car and by that time it had manufactured 791 Urracos. Out of these, 21 models were called Urraco PIII and were specially designed for the American market. This model had bigger front bumpers and controlled emissions, resulting in a less powerful engine. This was done because American regulations had strict guidelines and they had to follow them. The other versions of the Lamborghini Urraco were the Urraco P250, Urraco P300 and Urraco P200, with 3 litre, 2.5 litre and 2 litre V-8 respectively.

Lamborghini later on built the Lamborghini Silhouette, which had a detachable roof panel, followed by Lamborghini Jalpa, which had a 3.5 ltr V-8 engine. Both these cars were based on the Urraco.

The Lamborghini Urraco has managed to stay in news even after its production stopped in 1979. In 2005, it got featured in the Top gear segment and was placed against its arch rivals Maserati Merak and Ferrari Dino. It has definitely been able to sustain its legacy over the years.

Manufactured by Lamborghini in Italy, the car went into production from 1971 till the year 1990. The first prototype of the car made its debut at the illustrious Geneva Motor Show in 1971.

The Countach was designed beautifully by Marcello Gandini and had a sharp appearance. The car had the traditional Lamborghini V12 engine which was located backwards in order to provide better weight distribution. The Countach LP400 was equipped with six Weber carburettors. The car was expensively built with aircraft grade aluminium. This made the car extremely strong.

The LP400, thanks to its slick styled narrow tyres had low drag coefficient and hence a better speed. The doors of the car had horizontal hinges that became a trademark of Countach. Though it added style to the car, it was done because it was not possible to use conventional doors because of the width of the car. The Countach was used as a benchmark for many other Lamborghini models that followed.

They appealed a great deal to the performance car engineers and drivers but were no match to the distinction of the Countach LP400. An upgraded model of the Lamborghini LP 400 was later introduced in 1978 which was known as the LP400s. The car had some modifications done on the LP400 model and had a very fundamental look. As many as 157 LP400s were built during its time of production.

The Lamborghini Islero, which made its first appearance at the 1968 Geneva Auto Show was manufactured from 1968 to 1969. The car with the Lamborghini V12 engine came as the substitute for the 400GT. The car was named after the Miura Bull that killed Manuel Rodriguez, the famous matador in August 1947. The chassis of the Islero was designed by Carrozzeria Marazzi as Carrozzeria Touring had gone bankrupt. Lamborghini, the Italian automaker also manufactured a car called Miura between the years 1966 to 1973.

The design of the car was similar to the 400GT, however there were some alterations done to the track so as to accommodate wider tires. The Islero was also better than its predecessor in terms of its outward visibility, spacious interior and an improved soundproofing. The 4L V12 engine of the car had a 325 brake horsepower. It also had disc brakes and independent suspension. With a five speed transmission, the car could reach a top speed of 154mph and could accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 6.4 seconds.

The Islero S was later released in 1969 with some improvements made to the earlier model. The car had some major modifications done to its styling as well as the makeup of the overall body. The Islero S reached top limits of 161mph and took just 6.2 seconds to reach 60 from scratch. Compared to the 125 Islero, only 100 Islero S was manufactured during its time of production. The Islero S also appeared in the Hollywood thriller The Man Who Haunted Himself.

The production of the Lamborghini Miura was carried out between 1966 and 1973 in Italy. The sport car had a mid-engine layout and enjoys a history of great success in competitions. This layout later became a trendsetter among the two-seater supercars in its time. The chassis of the Miura was first unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1965 and it was an instant hit as multiple orders were placed for it although it did not have an actual body on display.

The styling of the sports car was inspired by the Ford GT40 and Marcello Gandini was the one who actually designed the body of this car as he did for most other Lamborghini cars. The 1966 Geneva Motor Show had both the chassis and the body on display for the auto lovers from across the globe. The unusual engine and the flashy bodywork made it look stunning. The car had opening hoods on both ends and there was also a trunk located behind the engine.

The Jota was one of the many models of this fabulous car. It was a one off car which was developed by Bob Wallace in 1972. It was originally built as a powerful test car for the Miura of the future. However, some financial constraints made the company sell this car in the late seventies.

The car was totalled in 1980 and it made Lamborghini built a replica of it. The Miura became very notorious initially for being prone to fire hazard which was later resolved by some modifications. The Lamborghini Miura comes fourth in the list of Top Sports Car of All Times.

The car could notch up a top speed of 155mph and took just 7.3 seconds for 0-60. The Jalpa was engineered with great quality which was even better than most other large cars of that era. Unlike other cars which had belt driven chain system, the timing system of this wonderful car was chain driven enabling it to hold combustion and timing specs in a much better way. The car was an easy ride in traffic and had a sturdy engine parts which included a five-speed synchromesh.

The masterpiece was available in seven different shades and the Bertone lines of its steel body made it look very stunning. The Lamborghini P140 V-10 which had bonded aluminum and carbon fiber came as a successor of the Jalpa. The thrill and pride of owning such a masterpiece of the automotive history makes you overlook the cost of maintenance and looking for rare replacement parts.

The Lamborghini Bravo presented by Bertone, made its first appearance in the 1974 Turin Auto show. It was a prototype that emerged as the successor of the P330 Urraco. The Lamborghini Bravo was a low-slung futuristic looking car. It had numerous references to the Countach when it came to style. The car ran over 40000 test miles before landing up in the Bertone museum.

The window arrangement of Bravo had an absolutely new design. They were dark and there was no sign of any windshield post between the front windscreen and the side windows which gave a striking effect of continuity. The side windows of the car also ran straight into the air intakes at the rear. The other style feature worth mentioning was the hoods at the front as well as the rear. The car was designed with rectangular air intakes and pop up headlamps which enhanced its looks. The five-cylinder theme wheels of Bravo were also tried later on the Silhouette and the Countach.

Although the production of the car was apparently possible, it was eventually not commercialized. The Bravo was a masterpiece when it came to style, but the car’s beautiful interior did not quite match the exterior. The interior though was very cramped and would have had to be redesigned if the car was put into production. The Bravo retired to Bertone’s museum after being in the limelight at several auto shows around the globe. The car was admired universally by the people for its sheer stylish design.
